What do I do if the weather is bad?

Snow, ice, and extremely cold temperatures may affect bus pick-up and drop-off times, sometimes causing buses to run late. The school district has the serious responsibility of deciding whether to close schools. Generally, schools will remain open except for extremely inclement weather. When severe weather conditions exist, parents must decide whether their children can get to school safely. Even when the school district decides to keep schools open, parents should review their own situation to determine if they should send their children to school. If a parent decides to keep the child(ren) at home, the absence will be considered "excused" and all work may be completed when the child returns to school.

Can I visit my child at school?

We welcome your visit to school and classrooms. To help us make your visit meaningful, please schedule your visit in advance with the office staff or teacher. We do not encourage visits immediately before school holidays or at the end of the school year, since those are extremely busy times for teachers and other staff members. Please report to the office before visiting any program or classroom. According to the School Visitation Rights Act of 1993, parents/guardians are entitled to eight hours of employer-granted leave to attend school conferences or classroom activities involving the employee's child during any school year. If necessary, a parent/guardian may obtain Verification of Attendance forms from the principal for their employer.

How should my child dress for outdoor play?

Children should come to school appropriately dressed for the weather and active outdoor play. Students who walk or ride by private vehicle should not arrive at school until five minutes before school begins. On extremely cold or rainy days, students will be permitted to enter the building upon arrival at school. Each school provides playground supervision at recess and lunch hour.

Can I talk with my child's teacher?

Most classrooms are equipped with a telephone. Parents may call the School and be connected to the teacher. If class is in session or if the teacher is out of the room, a message can be left in the offiice. The teacher will return the call as soon as possible. Emergencies should always be directed to the school office. Schools have a telephones that students may use with permission from the classroom teacher or office staff. Messages to students will be delivered to them by the end of the school day. Parents are requested not to call unless it is urgent.

What if my child loses something?

We urge parents to mark all personal belongings with the student's name in ink or with a name tag. Each school maintains a lost and found area where children may claim their lost articles. Parents may search the lost and found area for their child's lost clothing or school materials. The school district is not responsible for the loss of personal property.

My child's class is having a party, can I help?

At the teacher's discretion, two parties a year may be held in the classroom under the direct supervision of the teacher - at Halloween and Valentine's Day. Room representatives and PTO volunteers may be asked to help on these days. School programs, in keeping with the holiday season, may be held before the winter break. Light refreshments may be served. Please contact your PTO representative for more information.

Does my child use the Internet during instruction?

Educational opportunities can be greatly enhanced by taking advantage of the extended learning resources available on the Internet. MCUD #6 has developed a program to allow student access to the Internet. The district's goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence by assisting in resource sharing, creativity, and communication.

With this educational opportunity also comes responsibility. Before your child may have access to the Internet, you will need to read the Network Use Guidelines and sign a Letter of Agreement. A copy of the guidelines and agreement is available in your school's office. Your written authorization is required before your child may use this resource.

The use of inappropriate material or language or violation of copyright laws may result in the loss of the privilege to use the Internet. Please remember that you are legally responsible for your child's actions.

MCUD #6 takes precautions to prevent access to materials that may be defamatory, inaccurate, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate in the school setting. It is impossible, however, to control all material, and a user may discover inappropriate material. Ultimately, parent(s)/guardian(s) are responsible for setting and conveying standards for their children. The school district supports and respects each family's right to decide whether to authorize Internet access

Does the District have field trips or extracurricular activities?

MCUD #6 offers both educational field trips and extracurricular activities. Field trips are an important part of the educational program, and all students should participate in these activities whenever possible. Participants on all trips are chaperoned by teachers and other staff members, as well as volunteers. Parents whose children have a medical condition that could be life-threatening are encouraged to adjust their schedules to allow them to accompany the children on field trips. Parents must sign and return the consent form in order for their children to be allowed to participate.

The district offers a variety of voluntary extracurricular activities for students. Clubs are formed for students to expand their interests in such areas as environment. Junior high and high school conduct an extensive interscholastic sports program. Any student who participates in interscholastic sports must have written parental consent. An annual physical examination is necessary for participation in interscholastic sports.
