Morrison High School students Dailey Damhoff, Sarah Stralow, and Paige Leighton traveled to Springfield on Thursday, March 7 to participate in State Senator Win Stoller’s Youth Advisory Council meeting. During the session, they toured the Capitol Complex; met with students from schools across the 37th Legislative District for a Q&A session with Sen. Stoller; heard presentations from Rep. Travis Weaver; Mark Biel, CEO for the Chemical Industry Council of Illinois; and Lori Yates from the Illinois Senate Republican Caucus. Each speaker shared how he or she became interested in politics and public service and outlined his or her career path. Later in the afternoon, Dailey Damhoff and Sarah Stralow participated as lobbyists on a bill addressing social-emotional learning in Illinois’ schools during a simulated committee hearing chaired by Paige Leighton. The day provided students with a firsthand perspective on how ideas are transformed into laws and public policy in Illinois.

Congratulations to Morrison High School’s Scholastic Bowl team on its victory in the IHSA Regional on Monday, March 4! Morrison won its matches against Freeport (Aquin), Milledgeville, and Pecatonica. The match against Pecatonica was especially close—Pecatonica was leading 300-290 after the 23rd question of the match. On the 24th question—the final question of the match—Nara Hardesty buzzed in with the correct answer, and Blaine Williams contributed the answers to the bonus questions to ensure a 330-300 win for Morrison. Monday’s victory is the Scholastic Bowl program’s first IHSA Regional win since the 2015-16 season, when the team was led by its former coach, Adam Smith.
